The television is probably the most important thing for keeping the peace in any family home. How could we have kept ourselves entertained in the evenings without the TV? The thought of a world without Fair City, Eastenders, or Coronation Street is simply too much to bear for some.
Thankfully for us, we don’t need to imagine a world without soaps or TV entertainment because now, more than ever, televisions have been designed to entertain more than ever. With many Smart TV’s now allowing their users to change up their visual-audio experience at the touch of a button thanks to app compatibility, and many TVs coming in a matter of shapes and sizes, in 2022, we are spoiled for choice.
In this article, we are going to highlight a couple of things to consider before buying a new TV for your home, we will discuss how to pick the right size TV for you, and we will answer the all-important question when it comes to televisions, does size matter?
Choosing a Size
When picking a television, size is important, but there are a couple of things you should look at other than size. So while we will look at how to pick the right size television for your home, we will need to highlight a few other things too.
Measuring Screen Size – contrary to popular belief, television measurements are not taken horizontally; they are taken corner to corner or diagonally. For that reason, many buyers bring their TV home only to realize it looks smaller than expected. Compare the diagonal size to the amount of space available in your home, and work from there.
Seating distance – seating distance is a very important factor to consider when choosing the size of your television. If you have a smaller television, then the required seating distance to reduce eye strain and headache will be reduced a little, whereas with a larger TV, your field of view is reduced if you sit closer, so you will need a greater seating distance. This requires… you guessed it, a larger room. So basically, if your room is larger, you can afford to have a larger TV occupying it. Another factor is was resolution screen you go for. If you have 4k or 8k you can sit a little closer without noticing a reduction in picture quality. If you go for an HD-ready model you can lose quality if you sit too close.
A really useful calculation you can make is multiplying the TV size by 2, which is the minimal viewing distance required. So let’s say, for example, you are looking to buy a 54-inch TV from our collection. In order to get a rough idea of the optimal viewing distance required, you would multiply this by 2 to get 108-inches. This works out at around 9 feet. So the minimal seating distance if you are looking to add a 54-inch television to your home is 9 feet. If your room is unable to accommodate that distance, then you know that you should consider look into something a little smaller.
Top Tip: before measuring the size of TV you need, measure the seating distance you have in the room that the new TV will be in.
Does TV Size Matter?
Simply put, the answer is no. Many people equate television size to television quality, which is often because the price is likely higher. In fact, size does not always equal quality, and some of the best televisions we stock in our extensive collection here at DID are not the mammoth 70+-inch TVs, but are the 50-inch TVs or the 42-inch TVs. TV FAQs
How Far Should I Sit from my TV?The best and most immersive viewing experience is when the screen takes up 40 degrees of your field of view. This field of view distance can be calculated by just knowing the size of your TV. To get this suitable distance, multiply the screen size by 1.5-2.0. So for a 75-inch TV, that means sitting 110 inches or 2.8 meters away. Doing this will ensure that you get the best TV screen size for your room.
How Do I Measure the Size of a TV? The size of most televisions is expressed in inches. A big screen TV is shown with the word inch appearing in the centre. Dotted lines extend diagonally from the word inch to the upper left and lower right corner of the TV screen to show how to calculate TV size when measuring a screen.
What Size Television Should I Buy? This is a difficult question to answer because we do not know the size of the room you wish to add the TV into. However, as a general rule, if you are looking to sit about 6-8 feet away from your TV, anything between 32-40 inches will suffice.
